Managing People and Performance

This six module programme is designed to provide managers with the knowledge and skills to effectively manage their teams. Participants will develop management skills and awareness, leading to increased effectiveness, confidence, control and an overall feeling of being 'on top of things'.
They will have the opportunity to bring real life work issues in confidence to the session to explore, share and develop effective solutions to improve their management skills and their team's performance.
Participants will be asked to obtain feedback from team members and line mangers to help evaluate their effectiveness and performance as a manager pre and post programme.

This programme is delivered by John McCormack, a qualified FE teacher (Member IFL), Advanced Teaching Practitioner, an Accredited Member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and a Curriculum Manager for Business and Professions at a College of Further Education in London.
Duration:
The programme consists of 6 one day modules (delivered at fortnightly or monthly intervals) aimed at building your skills and knowledge in a practical way so that you can easily transfer the learning back into the workplace.

2. Standards and setting meaningful objectives:
KPI's - Why have them? Where do they come from? How do we set them?
Communications and agreeing performance standards
Gaining commitment from others - blocks to achievement
SMART objectives and Force Field Analysis - Practice on own situations

3. The Manager as Coach:
What is coaching?
GROW model
Skills of coaching, rapport building, active listening, reflecting and questioning styles of responding, to giving feedback

4. Managing Performance:
What motivates people?
Ideas and theories on motivation
The 'Doom loop'
Monitoring performance - How? Evidencing? Avoiding bias.
Performance issues - case studies and role play - challenging managerial issues including grievance and disciplinary situations - identifying issues and making links with organisational procedures.
5. Mediation and Conflict Resolution:

Programme Aims and Objectives:
By the end of the programme participants will be able to:
- Have increased reflective awareness of their management styles and flexibility to respond effectively to challenges
- Give effective reinforcing and developmental feedback, including providing coaching support
- Consider their communication style and the impact this has on others
- Establish meaningful standards and targets for their team
- Deal with performance issues and increase their knowledge of ways of analysing challenging interactions
- Improve skills in dealing with difficult behaviour and performance management issues
- Develop negotiation and assertiveness skills to arrive at 'win win' outcomes
- Develop own tool kit for use within the workplace
- Develop valuable relationships with other managers across the college
